Forthcoming Meets and Events

Listed below are the official PDMHS mining history meets and underground events. Some trips are subject to certain access or technical restrictions, others are weather dependent. You are advised to check with the meet organiser prior to attending as numbers are limited on some trips and meets may be subject to last minute changes.

Heritage Walk
Matlock Area
Tuesday 20th July 2010
Description: A walk around Old Matlock, looking at the old trades & pubs along the way. A chance to see the site of Toplis & Taylor, the alias with which ground zero was set up during the second world war. Also a walk down Bank Road the site of the former tramway which took passengers from Crown Square to Smedley Street. There will be a stop in Hall Leys Park to have a look at the tram shelter which once stood in Crown Square.

Heritage Walk
Cromford Village
Tuesday 3rd August 2010
Description: This trip around the village of Cromford will be looking at the site of the former lead smelter, Arkwright's Mill, the sites of former shops and pubs in the village and the outfall of Cromford Sough.
Optional food and drink at the Greyhound Hotel, Cromford, afterwards.

Underground Meet

Description: An intermediate SRT through trip. Although mostly natural cave, we'll be going in search of where the miners have left their mark. A 14m abseil, a low damp crawl or two and a slightly tight and acrobatic exit climb are included to add to the fun! Heritage Walk
Matlock Revisited
Tuesday 17th August 2010
Description: Another walk around the town of Matlock, taking a look at Old Matlock, including Pheobe Bown's grave, the old Wheatsheaf Inn and the old School House, Then we shall look at Matlock town itself, the site of the old pinfold, how Causeway Lane was developed, Steep Turnpike, Firs Parade, Hall Leys Park, Batemans Park, Matlock Bridge and finally the development of Dale Road.

Mining Heritage Walk

Description: A chance for new and old members alike to visit this magnificent mine and hear the story of its long and fascinating history. A nice way to bring to an end the summer season of guided walks.

Heritage Open Day 2010
Magpie Mine, Sheldon
Saturday 11th September 2010
Description: Heritage Day 2010 is on Saturday the 11th of September and will be held at Magpie Mine, Sheldon. The mine has a fantastic history stretching back to the 1600s. The mine will be open to visitors between 12.00 and 17.00. Surface tours will take place every hour or as needs require. There will be refreshments on offer and a souvenir stall.
Time: 12:00 noon until 5:00pm
Place: Magpie Mine, near Sheldon. Roadside parking is available and car parking attendants will be at the site to assist and help you enjoy your visit.

History Walk
Belper Town

Description: Another opportunity for members to enjoy a guided walk around sites of historical interest in Belper. Kindly led by knowledgeable members of Belper North Mill and Belper local history group.
Optional food and drink at the Riflemans Arms, Belper afterwards. If you missed the chance to do this walk in May this is to be highly recommended.

Ashford Black Marble Mine (Rookery Mine)

Description: Another opportunity to visit this popular Derbyshire mine which, if you have never visited it, is quite extensive, easy to explore and totally different from a typical Derbyshire lead mine. Dry apart from puddles. Mostly walking size passages. Access conditions limit party size to 15 (including leader).
