In March 2008, PDMHS arranged a trip to Mendip which was well-attended by a number of Society members.
On the Friday night, a visit was made to the beautifully-decorated Shatter Cave near Stoke St. Michael.
On Saturday, a number of members undertook a trip into Box Freestone Quarries (Box Stone Mines), followed by
a caving trip into Pen Park Hole, Bristol on the Sunday.
The description below has been provided by PDMHS member Ray Webster.
"Shatter Cave, in Fairy Cave Quarry, near Stoke St Michael was revealed in 1969. It is 1.373 km
in length and is of average difficulty with a few wriggles and short crawls. After the initial
crawl in from the locked door in the quarry face it consists of a series of spectacular large
chambers and passages.
The Cave is a stunningly decorated system due to the sheer abundance of pure white, translucent
and multi coloured calcite deposits. It is said to be one of the best decorated caves in Britain
with an unusual density and quality of formations.
Trips into the system are by prior arrangement and only groups of four with a leader are allowed."
