The Silver Eye Lead Mine in the Via Gellia consists of a series of interconnecting stopes and parallel rifts. Its intriguing maze of passageways, ginged shafts (some best avoided!) and sporting climbs combines to provide the more experienced mine explorer with plenty of interest and an opportunity to test their navigational skills.

From the entrance arch, the passage descends to a crawl through a blockage which has been re-opened - care! A little further in, climb through a 'window' to the left which leads past a hole in the floor on the left (take care - stacked deads/false floor) to a short traverse over a pit, which can be descended carefully from the far side of the traverse. This leads to a free-climbable (for the reasonably confident) pitch of some 15', which gives access to the lower levels and, at one end of the lower route, to some very steeply-inclined stopes and a series of higher level passages. A rope can prove useful on some of the more awkward and exposed climbs. This is not a suitable venue for the novice mine explorer!

The entrance lies within a SSSI so visitors are expected to observe the usual rules regarding conservation and protection of the natural environment and archaeological features both above and below ground. Please also be aware that bats roost in this mine and take care not to disturb them, particularly during their winter hibernation period.
